催眠是指一個人五官活躍,高度集中、並完全專注的自控狀態,它非常有利於學習與改變。催眠的狀態是非常自然,人人都曾經歷過,就如發白日夢時的恍惚狀態一樣。當我們進行冥想、祈禱或做運動時,也會容易進入這種狀態。
一代催眠宗師 Milton Erickson 在「催眠理論」曾這樣描述催眠的狀態和功能:
